I remember that feeling too , the feeling that everything else in life is crap and there is nothing else to do that is fun except use…….I am 28 and 13 months away from my last drug, my brother asked me to have a chat with my 16yr old niece last week as she is hanging wit potheads…I told her that I wasnt going to warn her off and say oh God that stuff will kill you blah blah …instead I explained to her besides the paranoia, the expense, social isolation etc the worst thing that I found out about weed was that it made me ok with doing nothing and then suddenly I woke up one morning 26 years old and nothing to show for my life ……same goes with the harder drugs they wipe your emotions and manipulate your serotonin levels in such a way that eventually it will be impossible to feel happy without them …a scary thought ….. the only thing you can not do when you give up is use …everything else in the world opens up for one once you quit !

Hey I’m 23 and I only have four months clean in recovery, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I went to a lot of music festivals and definitely did a lot of ecstasy and partying with friends. I am still making the transition, but myselfsober made a good point about brain damage. That is definitely one this that I regret the most with my using is that some damage is irreparable. When I first got clean, I dreaded the weekends because I was so used to going out with a lot of people to concerts, house parties, or the bar. I am also in grad school so I don’t have a lot of down time to have “fun,” but fun is becoming pretty simple for me. I enjoy hanging out with the friends in and out of recovery that completely support me and do not use around me. I play boardgames. One of the most enjoyable nights I had was sitting driving around in a little motor boat on a lake and having a fire. A friend played guitar. The thing is…you can do most of the things you did while you were using once you find some friends that are willing to support you. NA members tend to be ultra-supportive when you reach out and say you need their help. There are NA dances where you can socialize and there are usually younger adults there.

It’s a lot of work putting myself out there, but overall, I am finding that it is very rewarding. I find that the silliness and laughter that I have now is much more fulfilling than the nonsense I laughed at while I was using.
