I feel like I am ready to start my 4th step. I have searched for a sponsor but don’t have one yet, but do have someone in this site to chat with. I have done the first three steps. I have given my life over to God and work hard every day to follow His will for me. Today is the 11th day of not drinking for me. I want so much to stay sober and I need to work the steps! I was in AA before but didn’t work the steps and got drunk and stayed that way for a long, long time. I’d like to hear what you all think of this.

i can only speak from my own experience.

I could not have done my 4th step without the guidance of my sponsor. Heck, i still can’t do the 4th step without the help of other members. And when you do your 4th step, you are going to want immediately do your 5th step. No reason to sit on that inventory!

So, if you don’t have a sponsor (the first question that pops into my mind, is why not?), you will want to know that you have someone you can do your 5th step with as soon as you complete your 4th. The book says you can do this with anyone, in or out of the program. And i have heard of people doing it with people outside the program.

However, for me, having someone who understands the program and the nature of the 4th and 5th step was imperative. I would not have gotten to the issues, deep down, had that not been the case.

I am not sure what you mean when you say you have someone here you can chat with. I am also not saying you cannot do the steps with the assistance of that person. I have learned that is definitely possible.

If you have done steps 1 -3, I would suggest you pray and meditate on the question and seek guidance that way.

Good luck. Taking the 4th and 5th steps have been such a blessing in my life. i wish you the same.

Thanks, I will pray and meditate on it. I am looking for a sponsor, but the AA in my area is not very strong on that end. The women are very cool toward new people. I may have to do some driving outside my area to find one. The lady on this site that I’m PMing back and forth with will probably be happy to help me with it, I just wanted to get some thoughts from others about whether I should go ahead with it or not. Thanks for your input, it was helpful.
