Opponents of a proposed drug and alcohol treatment facility near Mud Creek Baptist Church say they agree such a facility is needed. With zoning authorities denying a permit for the facility, supporters are left with two choices: appeal the decision to the courts, or find another location.
The Henderson County Zoning Board of Adjustment on Wednesday unanimously denied First Contact Addiction Ministries’ request for a special-use permit to build the 20,000-square-foot facility on 1.3 acres across from the church. The decision came after public hearings spread over three meetings in which supporters and opponents argued their cases.
“Like you, I want to see treatment programs,” Board Chairman Ron Kauffman told those gathered for the decision. “The problem weighs on all of our hearts. I’m just not sure the good Lord’s will is for it to be right there.”
