People who have chosen drugs as a part of their life have also selfishly chosen to add their pain from their choice to their loved ones lives. So you have been (but not by choice) elected to deal with your loved ones drug addiction. How in hell can you accept and deal with someone addiction to drugs if you don’t understand what addiction is? There is a lot of controversy about addiction and if it is considered to be a disability or not. This article will take in consideration that addiction a dependency and that it is a disability, the reason why most people do not believe it is because they will never know this if they have not experienced it for themselves. This article does not make excuses for a person who has chosen to use drugs but if you really love the person you’re dealing with then you will take time out to understand what they are going through.
Find out the drug of choice of the person that you’re dealing with that is causing the problems in their lives. Sometimes this can be difficult because you may believe that a person is on one drug but that drug may be the cover drug of the drug of choice. When a person cannot get the drug of choice they may use other drugs such as alcohol, pain pills, marijuana and so on. These drugs are usually not the drug of choice but are a lot easier to get a hold to when they can’t get their drug of choice. These drugs may have leaded them to their drug of choice so when trying to kick their drug of choice these drugs become triggers. (Trigger: Something that either sets off a disease in people who are genetically predisposed to developing the disease, or that causes a certain symptom to occur in a person who has a disease.)
Now that you have discovered what that choice of drug is you will need to research the drug. Understanding the drug of choice will help you to determine the effect of the drug when a person uses it. Some drugs may cause great danger when used and you have to know if you’re dealing with a person that uses a drug that is causes a person to do harm. No matter how much you believe a person loves you does not mean that person would not harm you if their under the influence. The effect of being harm may become lethal. You want to be very careful if a person loses control when under the influence of drugs.
Not only have your loved one caused you pain from their choice of using drugs but they have caused pain to their children also and sometimes this is the main reason why people choose to deal with others on drugs. This is why this step is one that their choice will lead to you and other family members needing to get counseling and help for themselves. Sorry but you may feel less fortunate to have been one to have to deal with the problems of the choice of addiction by a loved one but oh well, that’s life and just like everything else in life, if you don’t deal with your problems then you will never gain control of them. In recovery and at the early stages of recovery, one must learn the twelve step program. This is a program you should acknowledge for yourself. There are help groups such as Nar-Anon (a twelve-step program for friends and family members of drug addicts) and Al-Anon and Alateen (international organizations jointly known as Al-Anon Family Groups with a membership providing a twelve-step program of recovery for friends and family members of alcoholics. Al-Anon is for adults within the program whereas Alateen is for young people.
The 12 Steps of Recovery:
Step 1 – We admitted we were powerless over our addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable
Step 2 – Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
Step 3 – Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God
Step 4 – Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves
Step 5 – Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs
Step 6 – Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character
Step 7 – Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings
Step 8 – Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all
Step 9 – Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others
Step 10 – Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it
Step 11 – Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out
Step 12 – Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs
Although this is the last step to this article, you must understand that recovery is endless. Most people who have an addiction and are doing well in recovery understand this. When dealing with someone in drug recovery most that are successful are those who have loved ones who go their process with them. Make no excuse of using drugs, be strong and consistent. Normally one addiction replaces another and helping someone find good strengths of what they are successful at doing you can make that be a replacement of their
