Drug rehab facilities are intended to detox a person from alcohol and drug addiction and introduce them to a new way of life without drugs and alcohol in a supervised environment. While this is accomplished through a variety of methods, the initial phase of drug rehab is to sever the physical dependence which can take from 3 to 10 days depending upon the severity of the addiction. Following physical detox, the majority of time spent at a drug rehab is to sever the psychological addiction and instill a new way of living sober.
Drug Rehab Detox
Drugs and/or alcohol must be removed from the body through a process called detox. Just quitting drugs or alcohol can be dangerous. The body has come to rely on the presence of a chemical and when it is removed, the body revolts. Withdrawal symptoms can range from headaches to seizures and everything in between. For this reason, medically supervised detox at a state-licensed drug rehab facility or hospital is advised.
Drug Rehab Evaluation
Once the body is physically stabilized, the client can be given a clinical evaluation to determine past history of drugs and alcohol use, physical health, emotional issues or trauma, chemical imbalance and family dynamics. This will help the treatment team at the drug rehab devise a treatment plan that is tailored to you. This plan will generally consist of drug and alcohol counseling and education. It may also include individual sessions with a psychologist, psychiatrist, marriage & family therapist and holistic practitioners depending on the level and quality of care offered at the drug rehab you choose.
Drug Rehab Treatment
Drug Rehab Treatment consists of a combination of therapies that treat mind, body and spirit. These therapies are designed based on the treatment plan from your clinical evaluation. Psychological sessions, counseling, nutrition, exercise, holistic processes, education, workshops and introduction to the 12-step model generally round out most drug rehab programs. This introduces clients to a new way of managing life without drugs and alcohol.
Drug Rehab Transition
Following drug rehab, transition back into society can be difficult. Most people return to the same environment and relationships they drank or used drugs in. This can be a trying time as people who are newly sober go from the 24 hour support of drug rehab to very little support. For this reason, some drug rehabs offer transitional living programs to help clients make the transition back to society within a safe and sober environment. The longer a person can commit do a drug rehab program, the better their chances at long-term sobriety.
